SUGGESTED BIBLIOGRAPHY
For the Interested Bible Student
Those who are interested
in carefully building a personal library in the area of Bible study face a
large and bewildering array of books.
Further, new books seem to keep pouring out by the hundreds each
year. Little wonder, then, that we either
don’t buy books or get stung with poor choices when we try. The following bibliography is provided in the
hope that it will guide you in making your choice of helpful books.
This book list covers
the areas of: Theology, Old Testament and New Testament commentaries, Bible
background, and miscellaneous works. The
books have been chosen with the WORD OF LIFE Bible Institute graduate in mind
and include a variety of rather simple books plus those that are designed for
the serious student. We have attempted
to recommend evangelically sound, conservative books. In some, however, there will be areas of
weakness (late date for Exodus, day/age theory, quoting of less than
conservative scholars, etc.). But this
is the exception and you should be able to evaluate this material adequately
based on your knowledge of the Scriptures.
Most of the books are still in print, some with the current price
listed. A number of out-of-print books
are listed, since these are nearly all available from used book sellers, most
easily found via the Internet (see www.bookfinder.com for a convenient way to
look up specific titles).
Stress needs to be
placed on the fact that this bibliography is a guide. Books should be selected according to
individual taste and needs; it is always best if you personally evaluate a book
before buying it. A great number of the
better books of our time are listed here, but that does not mean that you would
like or need them all.
After each book listing
(including author’s name, title, edition if helpful, publisher, and date)
either an “a” or a “b” is given. Those
books designated “a” should be thought of as simpler, more basic, and the
better beginning buy. Those marked “b”
are most likely designed for the serious student and they may be more complex
and cover wider or deeper issues than a comparable “a” book. This distinction is not always firm. It is a subjective attempt to give you
guidance. You should consider both types
of books.
We trust that this will
be a tool that will be helpful to you throughout your Christian life. Our study of God’s Word should never be finished,
although we may graduate from formal schooling.
